One of our favorite parts of the Tony Awards (aside from the fabulous fashion and totally GIF-able moments) is seeing stars perform selections from Broadway musicals in front of a nationwide audience (and this year's viewership was particularly revolutionary). The 2016 ceremony was chock full of great performances, including numbers from Shuffle Along, School of Rock, Fiddler on the Roof, She Loves Me, On Your Feet! and tons more. You already know which ones we loved, so we asked you to vote for your favorites! Here are the top three you voted for!
1. The Color Purple—24%
The Color Purple showcased its golden trio and soulful company in a performance that was too beautiful for words. Though the effervescent Danielle Brooks did not take home the Tony for Best Featured Actress, her powerful pipes and commanding stage presence during "Mysterious Ways" made it clear that this Broadway newcomer should stick around. Heather Headley's return to the Tony stage was just as welcome as her highly anticipated return to Broadway has been. And of course, Cynthia Erivo, who would garner her first Tony Award only minutes later, earned a standing ovation for her show-stopping "I'm Here." Seeing a LGBTQ character proclaim "I'm thankful for lovin' who I really am" was truly touching following the tragedy in Orlando, Florida. The Color Purple also received the Tony Award for Best Revival.
2. Hamilton—20%
It's not every Tony Awards that the President and First Lady introduce a musical number, and Hamilton's gargantuan success has been the result of the fact that it is unlike any tuner Broadway has seen. Christopher Jackson set the tone with his heavenly vocals on "History Has Its Eyes On You" which transitioned into the anthemic "Yorktown (The World Turned Upside Down)." Fresh off of their respective Tony wins (the show nabbed 11 in total), Daveed Diggs and Lin-Manuel Miranda's high five at "Immigrants—we get the job done" was particularly well-received by the crowd. As previously announced, the company omitted the use of muskets from their performance, another tribute to the victims in Orlando. Everyone is already obsessed with this musical's dope ensemble, so we're so glad we got to see them show off their moves!
3. Waitress—17%
A spotlight on Jessie Mueller is always a treat, and this number was made especially delicious from the get-go. Tony nominees Mueller and Christopher Fitzgerald as well as Keala Settle, Kimiko Glenn and the company of Waitress kicked things off with the delightfully bouncy "Opening Up." This was followed by Tony-nominated composer Sara Bareilles' appearance on a grand piano. She switched up the mood with our favorite good cry song "She Used to Be Mine," which Mueller strongly finished in her latest character's signature trill. Though Waitress did not garner any 2016 Tony wins, it's definitely a fave on this Broadway season's menu.
